'Washing machines live just as long without Calgon' ? Which?

Consumer organisation puts Calgon's infamous advertising slogan to test, and finds it wanting

Good news for anyone on a tight budget or who hates catchy advertising jingles: washing machines don't necessarily live longer with Calgon.

The manufacturers of Calgon, which has a retail recommended price of 4.48 for 15 tablets, say it contains polycarboxylates to soften hard water, preventing limescale from forming and thereby stopping the impairment of the washing machine's performance and reducing the risk of it breaking down.

But consumer organisation Which? simulated three years' worth of washing and found no evidence that using Calgon extended the life of the washing machine in "normal" washing conditions.

Although Which? found that using Calgon did reduce the build-up of limescale in the machine, the small layer that built up when it wasn't being used was insufficient to affect the running of the machine or suggest future failure.

Which? also believes that images used in Calgon's advertising do not accurately reflect "normal" wash conditions. While Calgon adverts show the effect of washing at 60C, the most common washing temperature is 40C, and this was the temperature used to test Calgon's efficacy.

Which? said: "Using Calgon in every wash, the average person would spend 295 over the course of six to eight years ? the time our expert believes it would take before a normal machine in an area with particularly hard water would require attention as a result of limescale build-up. This sum could pay for a brand new washing machine; and you'd expect to get plenty of change if you paid for a service, including removal of limescale."

Calgon told Which? it had research to back up its claims but couldn't share that evidence due to commercial sensitivity.

It said: "We were both surprised and disappointed to see the comments in the recent Which? report on washing machines regarding the use of water softeners such as Calgon. We found the report to be highly misleading.

"There is no dispute that the regular use of Calgon prevents limescale build-up in washing machines. Limescale build-up does cause problems, especially for users living in hard water areas. Calgon helps to protect all the parts of the machine that come into contact with water."

'Jobless Paddy' spends life savings on billboard ad

In response to mass unemployment and the prospect of having to emigrate, an unemployed Irish graduate has spent ?2,000 (1,745) on a massive billboard advertisement asking employers not to let him leave the republic.

Filim Mac An Iomaire, who erected an advertising hoarding on the busy Merrion Road in south Dublin in an attempt to find a job, has said he has been overwhelmed by the response.

The ad contains a picture of the 26-year-old marketing graduate facing a number of famous landmarks from Sydney, London and New York with the message: "Save me from emigration."

His ad has struck a chord across Ireland at a time when about 50,000 citizens, many of them young graduates, are expected to leave this year for work abroad. There are still up to 400,000 jobless workers in Ireland due to the property crash and the country's fiscal crisis.

Mac An Iomaire said he came up with the idea after being unemployed for eight months after a year in Australia.

"I had a good bit of money saved when I came home from Australia but I was managing to live on jobseeker's allowance. I gave it a week of hard thinking to come up with the concept and nothing was going to stop me then," he said.

"The great thing is that everyone's been so positive about it. No one has really had a bad word to say.

"Everybody who is close to me knows I've been pretty miffed about being unemployed and feeling like I've been on the sidelines."

Mac An Iomaire also set up a Facebook page and Twitter account, @Joblesspaddy, and has been inundated with emails and messages.

"I've had some really nice replies. Some CV experts are willing to spruce up my CV so I'm pretty overwhelmed with that," he said.

"It looks good for something to come out of it, anyway.

"I am not exactly looking for a concrete job offer. I would sooner go through the whole process of doing an interview," he added.

Samsung's Hottest Android Phone Is Already More Popular Than The iPhone In Korea

galaxy s ii

After 30 days, Samsung says it has already sold 1 million Samsung Galaxy S II phones in its home country of South Korea.

The Galaxy S II is the update to Samsung's wildly successful Galaxy line of Android phones that are available in some form or another on every U.S. carrier.

Just a week after the Galaxy S II went on sale in South Korea, its sales were already on pace to beat the iPhone 4 launch.

It only took a month to hit the 1 million mark, double the pace the original Galaxy phone sold in South Korea last year.

Granted, it's unlikely the phone will do as well outside of South Korea, but the strong sales numbers are a good sign for Samsung when the Galaxy S II finally comes to the U.S.

The Galaxy S II U.S. launch is still delayed, although it's likely to come to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint later this summer.
